Ohm B2

The B2 was the most sensitive speaker Ohm ever produced. It was basically a 2-way system with a 6.5 inch paper cone woofer and a 1 inch cloth dome tweeter combined with a built in 12’ inch sub-woofer. With the woofer firing toward the ceiling and the tweeter into the room, is was an early effort at controlled dispersion. The bass and mid-range were fully omnidirectional while the treble fired away from the walls and made placement much easier than a fully omnidirectional speaker.

Subwoofer

The twelve inch forward-firing subwoofer on the front of the cabinet reproduces the lowest frequencies, up to about 100 Hz. It used a paper cone with a corrugated cloth surround and a very large ferrite magnet. In the 1990’s and 2000’s, we sold a small number of replacement woofers that used a black (or dark gray) poly cone and a foam surround.

With the return of your B2 subwoofer, we offer an upgrade replacement subwoofer, which uses a paper cone with a buytl rubber surround. The new woofer has improved power handling over the original.

Included in the price of the upgrade replacement woofer is the pre-installed SubBass Activator circuit. This unique device is hand-wired to extend the reproducible low frequency range of your speakers and protect them from subsonic transients.

This upgrade is recommended in pairs, for optimum stereo reproduction. Price per each.

Grill

The grill is the cloth and frame used to cosmetically conceal the drivers without affecting the sound. Ohm now uses black grills in almost all cases. In the past, brown and brown/black mixes were used; but every ”brown” turned out differently. Now they are all black.

Since the B2 has elements on both the top and front faces of the cabinet, it uses a special V-cut grill that hinges to cover both of these faces.

Replacement grills come with black fabric and new Ohm logo badges. (Sorry, no more of the original die-cast logo badges!)

Recomended in pairs for cosmetic matching. Price per each.

Crossover service

The crossover is the electrical circuit that protects the tweeters from the low frequency energy that is reproduced by the main drivers. This can only fail, in rare instances, from overdriving the speakers.

B2 6.5 mid-woofer

The B2 used a 6.5 inch woofer with a special anti-resonant paper cone and a ferrite magnet.

If your woofer has become damaged, it can be replaced with our upgrade replacement woofer, which uses a poly cone. The upgrade replacement woofer is designed not to use a dust cap, in order to prevent unwanted wave propogation pathways through the resonating diaphragm. Instead, it will come with a felt washer to keep dust from accumulating inside of the magnetic gap. For added protection, we recommend storing your B2 with the grill on.

Price per each.

$95
3/4" Dome Tweeter

The B2 used a three-quarter inch cloth dome tweeter mounted on the front of the cabinet. This configuration allowed quasi-omnidirectional dispersion from the 6.5 inch mid-woofer on the top of the cabinet, without the drawbacks of omnidirectional treble. (Fully omnidirectional speakers suffer from poor performance when placed close to walls, as well as drifting stereo imaging.)

This tweeter requires no periodic maintenance, but can fail from being overdriven.

A damaged tweeter may either produce an audibly distorted “scratchy” sound, or may produce no sound at all, making the speaker sound very dull. In either case, a damaged tweeter should be replaced with a new tweeter.

As an upgrade replacement tweeter, we offer a three-quarter inch cloth dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. It produces slightly smoother treble response, with higher power handling than the original.

We have no more of the original tweeter face plates leftover from production of the B. If you so choose, you may send in your original tweeter in advance, so that we can fit your new tweeter to your original face plate. Please let us know when you place your order if you would like this additional service. If you do not return your original tweeter, you will receive your upgrade replacement tweeter mounted on a wooden face plate.

Recommended in pairs for optimum stereo reproduction. Price per each.

  • We have an improved 6.5'' woofer with a poly-cone for a smoother transition to the tweeter. A SubBass Activator can also be added to the sub-woofer to extend the bass, reduce the distortion and increase the dynamic range, plus uses a self-resetting protection circuit. The high tweeter is now a smaller dome for wider dispersion.

Note: Most Ohm upgrades require no specialized knowledge and are easily completed completed by any person. It takes less time to install your own upgrade than it does to package and return ship your speakers to the factory, therefore, we recommend you save time and money by doing this yourself. We ship the upgrade to your door with clear, easy instructions. If for any reason you prefer to have the factory complete your upgrade installation, we will be happy to do this for free, however, you will be responsible for shipping and handling costs each way.

  • Ohm allows up to $1000 for the return of a complete undamaged pair of Ohm B2s toward 25% of the purchase price of new Ohm speakers.
